Mayflower
Nathaniel Philbrick

What makes Philbrick's book so fascinating and accessible-the way he turns the Pilgrim legend on its head and shakes out fresh insights from the crusty old mythology we all absorbed in grade school-is present in full force. Such leading figures as William Bradford, Benjamin Church and Miles Standish of the so-called Plymouth Colony (which was not even close to Plymouth or its now-famous rock) emerge from the pages of history as understandable if not always admirable figures, and Guidall's evocations of the sadly depleted (by European diseases) Wampanoag Indians and their chief, Massasoit, are equally believable. The bitter voyage of the Seaflower (a slave ship taking captive Wampanoags to be sold in the Caribbean after a disastrous war with Massasoit's son, Philip), which rounds out Philbrick's masterful account, is treated with energy, respect and a straightforwardness that only increases its power. The Girl with No Shadow: A Novel
Joanne Harris

Harris revisits characters from 1999's bestselling Chocolat in this equally delectable modern fairy tale. More than four years have passed since Vianne Rocher pitted her enchanted chocolate confections against the local clergy's interpretation of Lent in smalltown France; since then, Vianne has renounced magic, changed her name to Yanne Charbonneau and moved with her two daughters to Paris's Montmartre district. There, Yanne embraces conformity and safety, much to the dismay of her increasingly troubled older daughter, Anouk. When Anouk becomes entranced with Zozie de l'Alba, an exotic itinerant who happens upon a job at the new shop, and the relationship grows increasingly sinister, Yanne must call up all of Vianne's powers, culinary and mystical, to save her family. The Fires of Spring
James A. Michener

David Harper was an orphan; his legacy, loneliness and poverty.  But his longing to embrace the world which abandoned him was stronger that the harsh realities.  Even his experiences as an adolescent con man and petty thief at a carnival did not destroy his dreams.  For it was there at the amusement park that David also learned about love and about women.   First the vulnerable young prostitute, Nora, who gave him her heart as well as her body.  Then with others...all of whom taught him the riches of himself. -Back Jacket May 1972 printing.
